Why You Can't (and Shouldn't) Cross to Freetown After Dark

• The government ferry finishes early. The last Tagrin–Freetown ferry leaves at about 8:30 PM. If your flight lands at 8 or 9 PM — as most international arrivals into Lungi do — the ferry is finished for the day.
• Water taxis are tied to flight schedules and fill up. The private sea-coach services time departures around arriving flights, but seats sell out, boats get cancelled in rough weather or rain season, and a delayed flight can mean the last boat leaves without you.
• The road route is a 3–4 hour night drive. Going around by road via Port Loko is long, dark, and not something to attempt tired, at night, in an unfamiliar country.
• A dark-water crossing after a long flight is the worst version of the trip. Even when a late boat runs, you arrive at a Freetown jetty at night and still need onward transport to your hotel.
