Early Flight From Freetown? Cross the Day Before, Not at Dawn
Lungi Airport is on the other side of the estuary from Freetown. If your flight leaves before midday, the safest plan is to cross the afternoon or evening before and sleep on the Lungi side. Here is why, how to time it, and what to book.
The short answer
If your flight leaves before about midday, cross to Lungi the day before and sleep near the airport. If it leaves in the afternoon, a crossing that morning is workable but still has little margin. The extra night costs far less than a missed international flight.
Why the morning crossing is risky
- Check-in opens early. International check-in usually opens about three hours before departure and closes about an hour before. Your airline may differ, so check your ticket.
- The crossing takes longer than it looks. A water taxi is typically 20 to 30 minutes and the government ferry 45 to 90 minutes on a good day, plus the trip to the jetty, boarding, and the transfer from the Lungi terminal to the airport.
- Things go wrong. Low tide, weather, a late boat, a full boat, luggage queues or a road delay can each cost you an hour.
- Timetables change. Operating hours of the water taxis and the ferry change with the season and conditions. Confirm with Sea Coach, Sea Bird or the ferry operator before you plan around a time.
A simple timing rule
| Your flight leaves | What we suggest |
|---|---|
| Before midday | Cross the afternoon or evening before and sleep in Lungi. |
| Midday to early afternoon | Cross the day before if you can. If not, take the very first crossing and leave Freetown early. |
| Late afternoon or evening | A morning crossing is usually fine. Leave a generous buffer. |
These are our guidelines, not guarantees. Your airline's check-in time is what matters.
What the day before looks like
- Finish in Freetown by early afternoon. Do not plan anything that depends on the last boat.
- Cross in daylight by water taxi or ferry and message us your arrival time.
- Our shuttle (NLe 500 per trip) or a taxi takes you to the guest house, about 6 minutes from the terminal.
- Eat, rest and repack. Reception is open 24 hours, so a very early departure is not a problem.
- Next morning, the terminal is a short drive away. No jetty, no tide, no dawn crossing.
