Sierra Leone Weather & Rainy Season Guide 2026
Sierra Leone has one of the most dramatic climates in West Africa — intense tropical rains, warm sunny dry seasons and a brief harmattan. Here is what to expect month by month, including what the weather means for your arrival at Lungi Airport and your stay in the region.
Sierra Leone's Two Main Seasons
Sierra Leone has a classic tropical climate with two clearly defined seasons:
- Dry season: November to April. Clear skies, lower humidity, cooler harmattan winds from the Sahara (December–February). The most popular time to visit.
- Rainy season: May to October. Heavy, frequent rainfall — Freetown and the western area receive some of the highest annual rainfall in Africa, averaging 3,500–4,000 mm per year. July and August are the wettest months.

The Rainy Season — What You Actually Experience
The rainy season in Sierra Leone (May–October) is more dramatic than "a bit of rain." During July and August, Freetown and the Lungi area can receive over 1,000 mm of rain in a single month. Downpours are typically intense, heavy and short — a 30-minute storm can drop enough water to flood dirt roads. Then it clears and the air smells clean and green.
What the rainy season means for Lungi specifically
- Airport access: The road from Lungi Airport to the ferry terminal can become muddy and slow during heavy rains. Allow extra travel time.
- Ferry crossings: The Sierra Leone River crossing can be rougher in strong rain, but the government ferry and speed boats continue to operate in most conditions. Severe storms may cause temporary suspensions.
- Accommodation: Stay at a guesthouse with reliable power backup. Hariom Yogi Guest House has generator power for when the grid is out during storms.
- Malaria risk: The rainy season is peak malaria season. Mosquitoes breed in standing water — use DEET repellent and sleep under a net. See our full malaria prevention guide.
- Flooding: Parts of Freetown experience serious flooding in August. The Lungi peninsula is generally less affected, but low-lying areas near the waterfront can flood.
The Dry Season — Harmattan and Heat
From November through April, Sierra Leone is sunny and dry. The harmattan wind carries fine Saharan dust down from the north, creating hazy skies (especially December–February) that can reduce visibility and irritate eyes and lungs. Temperatures in the dry season range from 27–35°C. March and April are the hottest months before the rains bring relief.
Visitor tip: The dry season (November–March) is the best time to visit for beaches, outdoor activities and general comfort. However, the rainy season has its own appeal — lush green landscapes, fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices.
Weather at Lungi Airport — Flight Considerations
Heavy rainstorms can occasionally delay or divert flights at Lungi International Airport (FNA). This is rare but happens 2–3 times per year during peak rainy season. International airlines (British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Air France) typically hold in the air during brief storm cells and land once they pass. Serious weather-related cancellations are uncommon.
More likely is a delay on the Lungi side — if you land during a heavy downpour, the walk from the plane to the terminal can get wet. Bring a packable rain jacket or light waterproof layer in your hand luggage during rainy season travel.
Packing for Sierra Leone's Climate
Regardless of season, Sierra Leone is hot and tropical. Pack:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton or moisture-wicking)
- A light rain jacket for rainy season (May–October)
- High-SPF sunscreen for the dry season — the sun is intense
- Insect repellent (DEET 30%+) year-round, especially important in rainy season
- A thin long-sleeved top for evenings (mosquito protection and air-conditioned buildings)
