Why Sierra Leone Now

🌊
West Africa's Finest Beaches — No Crowds, No Development
River No. 2 Beach — where an emerald river meets the turquoise Atlantic, flanked by forested hills — is among the most beautiful beaches in Africa. Tokeh Beach stretches 1.5 miles of white sand. Bureh Beach breaks perfectly for surfing. Banana Islands offer untouched snorkelling. All of them virtually empty. No sunlounger vendors. No resort blocks. Just the ocean and the sky.
🦍
Chimpanzees 40 Minutes from the Capital City — Nowhere Else Offers This
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, set in the Western Area Forest Reserve, houses over 100 rescued and rehabilitated chimps. It is a 40-minute drive from central Freetown. No other capital city on earth puts wild primate conservation within an hour of arrival. The combination of beach + wildlife + history within a single day's radius is Sierra Leone's unique proposition.
⛓️
Bunce Island — The History You Need to See
Bunce Island is one of West Africa's most significant Atlantic slave trade sites. Over 30,000 enslaved men, women and children were held in its dungeons before being shipped to the Americas, particularly South Carolina and Georgia. Its ruins — swallowed by vines, cannons still in place — lie one hour by boat from Freetown. A journey of profound historical and moral significance.
🐡
Tiwai Island — One of the World's Richest Wildlife Sanctuaries per Sq Km
12 km² of rainforest on the Moa River. Home to one of the richest primate populations in Africa: chimpanzees, pygmy hippos (among the rarest mammals on earth), red colobus monkeys, Diana monkeys, and over 130 species of birds. Guided night walks reveal the forest entirely differently. One of the most biodiverse places on earth relative to its size.
🏙️
Freetown — Founded by Freed Slaves in 1792. A City Like No Other.
Freetown was founded by freed Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia and London's "Black Poor." The Cotton Tree — a vast ancient kapok tree in the city centre — marks where the freed slaves gathered upon arrival in 1792 to give thanks. A history that resonates powerfully with anyone interested in the stories of those who survived the transatlantic trade and built a new homeland.
