Wildlife & National Parks in Sierra Leone — A Complete Guide
Explore Sierra Leone's wildlife. Chimpanzees, hippos, elephants and more. Guide to Outamba-Kilimi, Tiwai Island and Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Sierra Leone's Hidden Wildlife Riches
Sierra Leone is home to an extraordinary range of wildlife within dense tropical forests, wetlands and river systems. Decades of limited tourism have left ecosystems surprisingly intact — a wildlife tourism sector is only now beginning to develop. For nature lovers, this is a genuine frontier destination.
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Western Area
The most accessible wildlife experience from Freetown. Located in the hills of the Western Area Peninsula, Tacugama is a rehabilitation sanctuary for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees. Guided tours run daily and get you remarkably close to habituated chimp groups. It's an unforgettable experience and a vital conservation project.
- Distance from Freetown: 22 km, approximately 45 minutes
- Open: Daily 9am–4pm
- Entry: USD 15–20 per person
- Best time: Morning tours for more active chimp behaviour
Outamba-Kilimi National Park
Sierra Leone's only formal national park, covering 1,083 km² of savannah, forest and river habitat in the north of the country. Home to west African chimpanzees, African forest elephants, hippos, leopards, colobus monkeys, and over 200 bird species. Infrastructure is minimal — this is genuine wilderness.
- Location: Northern Sierra Leone, approximately 300 km from Freetown
- Access: 4WD essential; best in dry season (Nov–Apr)
- Accommodation: Basic camp facilities on-site; better options in nearby towns
Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary
A 12 km² island in the Moa River in the south of Sierra Leone. Considered one of the most important primate habitats in West Africa. Home to 11 primate species including the pygmy hippo — one of the rarest large mammals on Earth. Birdwatching is world-class: over 135 species recorded.
- Location: Kailahun District, southern Sierra Leone
- Access: 5–6 hours from Freetown by road; boat from the mainland to the island
- Accommodation: Eco-lodge on the island — book in advance
