While the rest of the surfing world battles for spots at crowded breaks in Morocco, Portugal and South Africa, Sierra Leone quietly offers excellent, uncrowded waves — with white sand beaches, warm water, and almost no crowds. The Atlantic swell hits the Western Area Peninsula with consistent force from October through April.

Bureh Beach — The Premier Break

Bureh Beach (also spelled Bureh Town Beach) is Sierra Leone's most celebrated surf spot. A consistent right-hander breaks over a sandy bottom with occasional reef sections. Best conditions: November–March, southwest swell, offshore winds in the morning. Suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. A small surf camp scene has developed here.

River No. 2 Beach

Famous for its dramatic scenery — the river mouth creates a unique sandbar that produces fun beach break waves. Inconsistent but when it's on, it's exceptional. Also excellent for swimming when flat. Accessible via a 90-minute drive from Freetown.

Tokeh Beach

Long sandy beach with beach break waves suitable for beginners and long-boarders. More sheltered than Bureh, making it a good option when bigger swells are running. The beach is beautiful and you're almost guaranteed to have it to yourself.

Kent Beach and Sussex Beach

Further south on the Peninsula, these beaches have less-explored breaks with consistent swell. Accessible to determined surfers willing to navigate the road south of Tokeh.

Getting to the Surf from Lungi/Freetown

All major surf spots are on the Western Area Peninsula, south of Freetown. From Lungi, take the ferry to Freetown first, then hire a vehicle for the drive south. Driving time from Freetown to Bureh Beach is approximately 1.5–2 hours on paved and dirt roads. A 4WD is recommended in the rainy season.

Equipment

Bring your own board — surf rental options are extremely limited. A 7'0" or larger all-rounder is ideal for the varied conditions. Leash, wax (tropical), and rash vest are essential.
