Sierra Leone Currency & Money Guide 2026 — Leones, USD & Exchange
Complete guide to money in Sierra Leone. Currency exchange, ATMs, mobile money, USD vs Leones, and the best ways to manage cash in Freetown and Lungi.
Sierra Leone's Currency: The New Leone (NLe)
Sierra Leone redenominated its currency in 2022, introducing the New Leone (NLe) by lopping three zeros off the old Leone. As of 2026, approximate exchange rates are: 1 USD ≈ NLe 20–25 (rates fluctuate — always verify on arrival). The USD remains the most commonly used foreign currency in the country for larger transactions.
Cash vs. Digital Payments
Cash remains king in Sierra Leone, especially outside Freetown and in places like Lungi. However, mobile money and card payments are increasingly accepted:
- Cash (USD and NLe): Essential. Carry a mix of denominations. Small NLe notes for local markets, USD for hotels, transport, and larger purchases.
- Mobile Money (Orange Money, Africell Money): Widely used for local transactions. If you have a local SIM and register for mobile money, this is the most convenient for day-to-day spending.
- Visa/Mastercard: Accepted at larger hotels (including Hariom Yogi via Stripe), supermarkets, and some restaurants in Freetown. Not reliable for small local businesses.
ATMs in Sierra Leone
ATMs are available in Freetown — mainly at Rokel Commercial Bank, Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, and GT Bank branches. They dispense NLe. USD withdrawal is not possible from ATMs. ATM reliability is variable — have cards from two different networks (Visa and Mastercard) and withdraw in the morning when machines are more likely to be stocked.
⚠️ Lungi ATM warning: There are no reliable ATMs in Lungi. Always arrive with sufficient cash — USD and/or NLe — for your stay. We recommend carrying USD 100–200 minimum for a short visit.
Currency Exchange
Exchange rates vary significantly between banks (official, lower rate) and forex bureaux or individuals (better rates, higher risk of scams). For reliable exchange in Lungi, Hariom Yogi offers on-site forex exchange for guests — typically competitive rates compared to airport counters. In Freetown, authorised forex bureaux on Siaka Stevens Street and around the Aberdeen area offer reasonable rates.
Sending Money to Sierra Leone
For incoming transfers, the most reliable services are Western Union, MoneyGram, and WorldRemit. All have branches or agents throughout Freetown and many in Lungi. Remittances are a significant part of the Sierra Leonean economy and the infrastructure is well-established.
Tips for Managing Money in Sierra Leone
- Bring crisp, new USD bills (2009 series or newer) — torn or old notes are often refused
- Always count change carefully — honest mistakes are common
- Don't exchange money with strangers on the street
- Keep a card and USD emergency reserve separate from your main wallet
