Pygmy Hippos in Sierra Leone: Where to See Them, Tiwai Island and How to Get There from Freetown Airport
Pygmy hippos, primates and rainforest in Sierra Leone: where to go (Tiwai Island, Gola, Outamba-Kilimi, Tacugama) and how to get there from Freetown airport.
Short answer: the pygmy hippo is one of Africa's rarest and shyest large mammals, and Sierra Leone is one of the few places you can look for it. The best-known site is Tiwai Island. It takes a full day of driving from Freetown, a 4x4 and a canoe, and a sighting is never guaranteed. Fly into Freetown airport (in Lungi, across the water from the city), allow for the boat crossing, and book guides in advance.
Why pygmy hippos are worth the trip (and why you may not see one)
Pygmy hippos are much smaller than the common hippo, live in forest rivers and swamps in West Africa, and are shy, solitary and most active at night. Sierra Leone is one of their strongholds, which is why conservation groups and wildlife-tour companies feature it. The honest expectation: you are far more likely to see monkeys, chimpanzees, birds and forest scenery than a pygmy hippo, so go for the whole forest experience.
Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary
- What it is: a river island sanctuary on the Moa River in the south-east, run by the Sierra Leone division of the Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA). Guides describe walks, canoe trips at dawn and dusk, and a large number of primates (one guide counts 11 species) and birds.
- Getting there: from Freetown, the highway to Bo (recently resurfaced, about three hours by guide estimates), then the Potoru to Tiwai road to Kambama village, then a canoe or motorboat. Estimates for the whole journey run from about five to more than seven hours each way depending on the road, so treat it as a full day. Use a 4x4 with a driver; one guide says there is no public transport to the launch point. Overnight parking at the launch point costs extra.
- Costs (check first): the sanctuary's own price page lists a day visit with the boat from Kambama at US$7 for nationals and US$15 for non-nationals; tent stays US$16 and US$30; research lodge beds US$30 and US$40. That page is undated and quotes old leones, so confirm today's rates. Guided walks are priced locally. Packaged tours cost much more: for example, a 3-day, 2-night tour from US$650 is listed by Visit Sierra Leone.
- Accommodation: basic tents and huts. Book ahead through EFA or a local operator.
- Best season: the dry season, roughly November to April.
Other wildlife places you can reach from Freetown
- Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary: about 30 to 40 minutes from central Freetown via Regent; the last steep stretch needs a 4x4. Guided tours run at fixed times, booking in advance is recommended, and you should arrive about 30 minutes early. Self-catering eco-lodges allow an overnight stay. It is the only one of these that works as a day trip.
- Gola Rainforest National Park: in the south-east; the park headquarters is in Kenema, about 311 km and 4 to 5 hours from Freetown, then unpaved roads (4x4) to the Gola Conservation Centre at Lalehun. Known for birds (including the white-necked picathartes) and forest primates. Dry season November to May.
- Outamba-Kilimi National Park: in the far north near the Guinea border, about 296 km from Freetown; guides estimate roughly 6.5 to 9 hours by 4x4, with river ferries that can break down in the rains. Known for hippos and chimpanzees; canoe trips on the Kabba River. Tented camp, no mains electricity.
Flying in: what to plan before the forest
- Land at Freetown airport (FNA), which is in Lungi, not in Freetown. See the Freetown airport guide.
- Cross to Freetown by water taxi (Sea Coach or Seabird, adult from US$50) or the public ferry: fares, times and contacts. Boats generally do not run reliably at night.
- If you land late, sleep first at an airport hotel in Lungi and start the long drive fresh. Hariom Yogi Guest House is opposite the New Airport Gate, about 2.8 km from the terminal: rooms from US$50, free cancellation, airport pickup on request. See hotels near Freetown airport.
- Book a licensed guide and a 4x4 through EFA, Gola's own booking contacts or a Sierra Leone operator; carry a yellow fever certificate and malaria prevention advice from a travel doctor.
- Flying out: return to the airport side the day before your flight.
