Lungi to Freetown Ferry Guide 2026 — Times, Cost & Alternatives
Complete guide to crossing from Lungi Airport to Freetown by ferry, water taxi or helicopter. Schedules, prices and what to do when ferries don't run.
The Lungi–Freetown Crossing: What You Need to Know
Getting from Lungi Airport to Freetown requires crossing the Sierra Leone River estuary. There is no bridge. Your three options are: government ferry, water taxi (speedboat), or helicopter. Each has very different costs, schedules, and reliability levels.
Option 1: Government Ferry (SLMA)
The cheapest and most traditional crossing. Operated by the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration.
- Cost: Approximately SLE 50,000–100,000 (USD 2–5) per person
- Journey time: 45–90 minutes depending on vessel and conditions
- Schedule: Roughly 6am–6pm, subject to change. No service at night.
- Reliability: Medium — cancellations due to weather, mechanical issues, or low tide are common
- Vehicles: Yes, vehicles can be loaded but queues can be hours long
⚠️ Warning: Never count on the last ferry of the day. If your flight arrives after 4pm, plan to stay in Lungi overnight rather than risk a cancelled crossing.
Option 2: Water Taxi / Speedboat
The faster, pricier private option. Multiple operators at the Lungi jetty.
- Cost: USD 20–50 per person one-way
- Journey time: 20–30 minutes
- Schedule: More flexible than government ferry, but still daylight hours only
- Reliability: Higher than ferry, but weather-dependent
Option 3: Helicopter
Fast, premium, and weather-resilient. Used by senior NGO staff, diplomats, and business executives.
- Cost: USD 80–150+ per person, or charter rates for groups
- Journey time: 8–12 minutes
- Operators: Ask Hariom Yogi team for current contacts — operators change frequently
