Lungi Beach Guide 2026 — Best Beaches on the Lungi Peninsula
Most travellers passing through Lungi Airport never realise that beautiful Atlantic beaches are within a 15–30 minute walk or short ride. This guide covers the best beaches on the Lungi Peninsula — quiet, undiscovered and free.
Why Lungi Has Great Beaches
The Lungi Peninsula juts into the Atlantic Ocean, giving it direct exposure to warm West African ocean swells. Unlike the beaches immediately south of Freetown (which can be busy with city day-trippers), Lungi's beaches are generally quiet, undeveloped and accessed mainly by locals and a handful of travellers who know where to look.
The peninsula's beaches face both the open Atlantic (rougher, great for watching surf) and the sheltered Sierra Leone River estuary (calmer, better for swimming). The water temperature is warm year-round — typically 26–30°C.
Best Beaches Near Lungi Airport
Lungi Atlantic Beach (Main Ocean Beach)
The primary Atlantic-facing beach is about 1.5–2 km from the airport, accessible by okada (motorbike taxi) or a 20-minute walk. This stretch of beach is wide, sandy and largely deserted during weekdays. The surf here has real power — not suitable for weak swimmers but excellent for watching waves and walking along the shore. Local fishing boats use this beach in the early morning.
Getting there: Take an okada from outside the airport towards the coast road. Cost: NL 5,000–10,000 (under USD 0.50).
Best for: Sunrise walks, photography, beach strolls, watching fishermen.
Tagrin Beach (Near the Ferry Terminal)
Tagrin is where the ferry to Freetown departs, and the beach alongside the jetty is a genuine hidden gem. At sunset, the view across the Sierra Leone River towards Freetown — with the hills of the Peninsula visible in the distance — is spectacular. Local food sellers set up in the evening with grilled fish, cold drinks and fried plantain.
Getting there: Tagrin Ferry Terminal is about 3 km from the airport. Shared taxi (poda-poda) or okada from Lungi town.
Best for: Sunsets, local food, watching ferry traffic, photography.
Lungi Town Beach
Within Lungi town itself, a short stretch of beach faces the estuary. Calm water makes it suitable for a swim. Local children play here in the afternoons. The beach is not cleaned or maintained in a formal sense, but it is perfectly pleasant for a casual dip. An ideal spot to watch local life — women washing clothes, fishermen repairing nets, kids playing football at the water's edge.
Getting there: 10–15 minute walk from Hariom Yogi Guest House through Lungi town.
Best for: Swimming (calm estuary water), watching local life, quick beach access.
What to Bring to Lungi Beaches
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The equatorial sun is strong even on overcast days
- Insect repellent: Essential at dawn and dusk — Lungi is a malaria zone
- Cash (NL or USD small bills): To pay food sellers and okada drivers
- Drinking water: Buy sealed bottled water before heading to the beach — vendors at beaches may not always be present
- A bag for belongings: Leave valuables at your guesthouse; take only what you need
Beach Safety on the Lungi Peninsula
The Atlantic-facing beaches have strong currents and occasional rip currents. Swim with caution and do not swim alone. The estuary-facing beaches (Tagrin, Lungi Town) have calmer water and are safer for casual swimming.
There are no lifeguards on any Lungi beaches. Go with a local guide if you are unfamiliar with the area — the team at Hariom Yogi Guest House can arrange orientation walks and point you to the safest spots.
Layover tip: If you have a long layover at Lungi Airport, a sunset walk to Tagrin Beach followed by grilled fish from a local seller is one of the best ways to spend an evening in Sierra Leone. Return to your guesthouse before dark.
Beaches Further Afield from Lungi
If you have more time and want to explore Sierra Leone's world-class beaches further south, day trips to the Freetown Peninsula beaches (River No. 2 Beach, Tokeh, Black Johnson) are feasible from Lungi. These require crossing to Freetown first, then driving south — allow a full day. See our guide to the best beaches near Lungi Airport for the full tour.
