Tightened security at Lungi Airport during the 2026 ECOWAS Summit — what to expect at FNA immigration, faster clearance tips, and why staying Lungi-side saves hours.
If you're flying into Freetown for the ECOWAS Summit period this year, expect a different Lungi than the usual sleepy arrivals hall. Sierra Leone Airport Authority and the security services have publicly announced tightened protocols at Freetown International (FNA) around the summit window — more uniforms at the apron, tighter perimeter access, extra document checks, and slower vehicle screening on the airport road toward Lungi town. I run a small homestay a few minutes from the terminal, so this is a peer-to-peer note on what actually changes on the ground and how to plan your arrival.
What "tightened security" actually means at FNA
From what we're seeing and hearing from ground handlers, drivers and neighbors who work the terminal, expect the following during the summit window:
- More layered ID checks. Passport plus boarding pass may be checked before you even enter the arrivals hall, again at immigration, and again before you exit the terminal into the forecourt.
- Restricted forecourt access. Meet-and-greet drivers who used to wait right at the door may be pushed further back. Confirm a meeting point with your host or driver in advance — don't assume you'll spot them at the curb.
- Delegation priority lanes. ECOWAS delegations, their vehicles and the Sea Coach / Seabird water-transfer boats to Freetown will get priority slots. Regular tourist and business travelers may wait longer for the Aberdeen ferry transfer.
- Extra checks on the Lungi–Freetown road corridor. If you're being driven around the peninsula (the long land route via Port Loko and the bridge), expect checkpoints.
- Photography restrictions. Airport apron and any visible security posture — don't photograph. This is normal in Sierra Leone but strictly enforced during summits.

Clearing immigration faster at FNA
FNA is small, but during summit weeks the queue gets bunched up when two wide-bodies land close together (Brussels, Air Peace, ASKY, Kenya Airways, Air Côte d'Ivoire and the Royal Air Maroc rotations often stack up). A few things that genuinely help:
- Fill your arrival card on the plane. Cabin crew hand them out — many travelers ignore them and end up scrambling at the counter. Have your Lungi address ready (your hotel or homestay name and area — "Lungi town" is fine if you don't remember the street).
- Have your Travel Health card / port health QR ready before you deplane. Requirements have changed several times — check the current rules on the Ministry of Health or your airline's Sierra Leone page before you fly. Don't rely on what a friend told you six months ago.
- Yellow fever card in the same pocket as your passport. It's still asked for.
- Cash for the airport levy in USD small bills. The Travel Facilitation Fee is normally pre-paid or collected at check-in on departure, but during busy periods staff sometimes reconcile on arrival. Have small notes; ATMs at FNA are unreliable.
- Skip the touts. Anyone offering to "help" you past immigration for a fee is not official. Just queue.
- Local SIM at the terminal. Orange and Africell kiosks are usually open for arriving flights. Buy one before you leave the building — it makes coordinating with your driver much easier if plans shift.
The Lungi-side decision: why staying overnight saves hours
Here's the honest math for summit week. Most first-time visitors book a hotel in Aberdeen or central Freetown and try to transfer the same night. The standard options are:
- Sea Coach / Seabird water taxi — normally ~30–40 minutes across the estuary, plus the shuttle from FNA to the jetty and from the Aberdeen jetty to your hotel. Total: realistically 2 to 3 hours door to door on a good day.
- Pelican / Sea Bird ferry — cheaper, slower, and last departures don't always align with late-arriving flights.
- Government Ferry via Tagrin — cheapest, unpredictable, not recommended if you're jet-lagged.
- Land route via the Port Loko road and the peninsula — 4+ hours and, during summit week, likely more because of checkpoints.
During the ECOWAS Summit period, add uncertainty to all of the above. Water-taxi slots get taken by delegations, checkpoints slow the road, and if your flight is delayed even 90 minutes you can miss the last comfortable transfer of the night.
Staying on the Lungi side for the first night — either at one of the airport hotels or at a homestay in Lungi town — means you clear immigration, drive 5 to 15 minutes, sleep, shower, eat, and cross to Freetown fresh in the morning when the water taxis are running normally and the summit motorcades are done for the day. If your meeting or event is actually at the airport-facing venues or you're transiting onward, you may not need to cross at all.
Practical Lungi-side tips for summit week
- Book your onward crossing for the next morning, not the same night. Sea Coach and Seabird both take advance bookings via WhatsApp; confirm the day before.
- Carry cash in Leones and small USD. Card acceptance in Lungi is thin. Africa Bank and a couple of ATMs work but not always.
- Eat before you cross. Lungi has decent local food — cassava leaves, groundnut stew, fresh fish from Tagrin. It's cheaper than Aberdeen and the portions are honest.
- Confirm your driver's plate number by message. With tightened forecourt access, you want to identify your ride quickly and not wander.
- Don't argue with security. If a checkpoint wants to look in the boot, let them. Summit weeks are not the time to test your rights.
- Keep flexibility on the return. Departures out of FNA during summit close-out days can be slow. Aim to be at the terminal a full 3 hours before an international flight, not the usual 2.
