Internet & Wi-Fi in Sierra Leone 2026 — Speed, SIM Cards & Data
Practical guide to staying connected in Sierra Leone and Lungi. Best SIM cards, mobile data, Wi-Fi options and tips for NGO workers and business travellers.
Connectivity in Sierra Leone: The Reality
Sierra Leone's internet infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years with undersea cable expansion, but speeds remain inconsistent, especially outside Freetown. Mobile data is generally more reliable than fixed-line internet. For work-from-Sierra Leone setups, preparation is key.
Mobile Networks
Two main operators dominate the market:
- Africell: Generally considered the best data network in Sierra Leone. Good 4G coverage in Freetown and Lungi. Popular with expats and NGO workers. Data bundles are affordable.
- Orange Sierra Leone: Strong voice and SMS coverage. Data quality varies more than Africell. Also widely available.
- Qcell: Smaller operator with improving coverage. Worth having as a backup SIM.
Getting a SIM Card
SIM cards are available from vendor kiosks in Lungi town, near the airport exit, and at larger shops in Freetown. You'll need to:
- Purchase a SIM starter pack (usually SLE 5,000–10,000)
- Present your passport for registration (legally required)
- Purchase a data bundle separately — either via USSD code or at any recharge vendor
💡 Hariom Yogi tip: Ask our team and we can help you get set up with an Africell or Orange SIM immediately — we know the reliable vendors and can ensure you're not overcharged.
Data Bundles (Africell, 2026 Approximate)
- 500MB — NLe 25–35
- 1GB — NLe 50–70
- 5GB — NLe 200–250
- Monthly bundles available at larger denominations
Wi-Fi at Hariom Yogi
We provide free Wi-Fi to all guests, backed up on Africell 4G for reliability during grid power cuts. Speed is typically 5–15 Mbps — adequate for email, WhatsApp, video calls, and remote work. We recommend combining our Wi-Fi with your own mobile data SIM for critical work sessions.
Tips for Remote Workers
- Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before leaving Freetown
- Use a VPN — WhatsApp calls and some services can be unstable without one
- Keep a backup power bank charged — load shedding is common
- Download documents before travel — cloud access can be slow on mobile data
