Best Beaches in Freetown & Sierra Leone 2026 — Complete Guide
Discover Sierra Leone's stunning beaches. River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh, Lakka and more. Complete guide with directions, tips and what to expect in 2026.
Why Sierra Leone Beaches Are Among Africa's Best
Sierra Leone's coastline stretches over 400 km with some of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches in the world. White sand, warm Atlantic water, palm trees, and almost no tourists — this is what most of the world's most famous beaches looked like before mass tourism arrived. The secret is getting out.
River No. 2 Beach — Sierra Leone's Most Famous
The postcard beach of Sierra Leone. A wide arc of white sand with a palm-fringed river mouth at one end — completely photogenic, genuinely beautiful. River No. 2 has a community tourism setup with local guides, canoe trips up the river, and basic beach bars. Day trip from Freetown is popular on weekends.
- Distance from Freetown: 40 km, approximately 90 minutes
- Entry fee: Small conservation fee (NLe 10,000–20,000)
- Facilities: Beach bar, basic toilets, hammocks for hire, canoe rental
- Crowds: Busiest on weekends — visit Tuesday–Friday for a near-private experience
Tokeh Beach — Long, Sweeping, Stunning
Tokeh is where the Western Area Peninsula curves dramatically, creating a kilometre-long sweep of white sand. Ideal for long walks, swimming, and relaxing. The beach has a small resort (Tokeh Sands), numerous local guesthouses, and beach bars. More developed than River No. 2 but never crowded by global standards.
Bureh Beach — Surf Capital
Known primarily for surfing (see our separate surf guide), Bureh is also a beautiful swim and chill beach. A small expat and surf community has settled here. Weekend bonfire nights have become a social institution for Freetown's expat crowd.
Lakka Beach — Closest to Freetown
Just 17 km from central Freetown, Lakka is the most accessible beach for a quick escape. Popular with locals at weekends, quieter on weekdays. Infrastructure is basic but food and cold drinks are available from beach vendors. Good swimming in calm conditions.
Lumley Beach — Urban Beach
Freetown's own beach strip, running along the Aberdeen/Lumley waterfront. More urban than the Peninsula beaches — grittier, busier, with beachside bars and restaurants. Not for swimming (currents and water quality vary) but perfect for a sunset beer and people-watching.
Getting to the Beaches from Lungi
All Peninsula beaches require crossing to Freetown first, then driving south. From Lungi Airport, the journey to Tokeh is approximately 2.5–3 hours including the ferry crossing. A half-day or full-day beach trip from Freetown is easily doable. Hariom Yogi can assist with vehicle hire and driver recommendations for beach day trips.
Beach Safety Tips
- Rip currents are present on exposed beaches — swim within your ability and respect warning flags
- Never leave valuables unattended on the beach
- Apply sunscreen regularly — the equatorial sun is intense
- Respect local community areas — ask before photographing people
