Best Time to Visit Sierra Leone 2026 — Seasons, Weather & Events
Complete guide to Sierra Leone's seasons. When to visit for beaches, wildlife, NGO work or the dry season. Month-by-month breakdown for 2026.
Sierra Leone's Two Seasons
Sierra Leone has a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the rainy season (May to October). Understanding these seasons is essential for planning your visit — they affect roads, beach access, wildlife, and general comfort dramatically.
Dry Season: November–April (Best Time to Visit)
This is the peak travel season and, for most visitors, the best time to come. The Harmattan wind blows in from the Sahara, bringing cool, dry air. Temperatures range from 24–34°C. Roads are passable. Beaches are stunning. Wildlife viewing in Outamba-Kilimi is excellent as animals congregate near water sources.
- November–December: Start of dry season. Roads improve. Great for beach holidays.
- January–February: Peak dry season. Harmattan is strong — expect hazy skies but cooler temperatures. Best for interior wildlife tours.
- March–April: Late dry season. Hot and sunny. Excellent beach weather. Freetown and Lungi are very accessible.
Rainy Season: May–October
Heavy rainfall, often 3,000–5,000mm annually. Roads — especially rural and unpaved — become extremely difficult or impassable. That said, the landscape is lush and green, rivers are full, and there are far fewer tourists. Prices drop significantly. For NGO workers, the rainy season is often when the most critical humanitarian work happens.
🌧️ Rainy season tip: Lungi and the airport area are accessible year-round. Flights operate normally. Hariom Yogi stays open throughout. If your work requires staying in Lungi rather than venturing inland, the rainy season is completely manageable.
Month-by-Month Highlights
- January: Excellent beach weather. Turtle nesting season. Dry and breezy.
- February: Peak Harmattan. Slightly cooler. Good for interior tours.

- May–June: Rains begin. Waterfalls fill up. Lush and green.
- July–September: Heaviest rains. Interior travel challenging. Freetown accessible.
- October: Rains easing. Countryside still green and beautiful.
