Essential pre-trip bookings for Sierra Leone visitors: accommodation, transport, visas & more. Ground-truth checklist from Lungi-based hosts.
You've decided: 2026 is the year you're coming to Sierra Leone. Smart move. But before you buy that flight, stop. There's a specific order to how things should happen, and getting it wrong means stress, higher costs, and a rough first 24 hours in Freetown or the provinces. I've been hosting travelers through Lungi International for years now, and the difference between guests who arrive calm and sorted versus those who arrive frazzled always traces back to what they booked—and when.
Here's what you actually need to lock down before your feet touch the tarmac.
I say this every time: book your first night—and ideally your whole stay—before you land. This isn't just comfort; it's logistics.
Lungi International is about 1.5 hours from Freetown by ferry and road. If you arrive without a confirmed bed, you're looking at midnight scrambling, inflated prices from desperate hotel brokers, and taxi drivers who've already written your bill at triple rate. When you book a place like yogistay in advance, we know you're coming. We arrange your Lungi pickup (our network operates airport-side), you clear customs and immigration with a clear head, and you move with purpose.
Accommodation also anchors your itinerary. Once you know where you're staying, you know your neighborhood, your transport radius, and which activities and restaurants are realistic. It's the foundation.
Timing: Book this 4–8 weeks ahead, or 12+ weeks if you're visiting during peak season (November–February).
Sierra Leone's visa policy shifts slightly year to year depending on your passport country. Some nationalities get 90 days visa-free; others need to apply in advance. Don't assume. Check the official State House portal or the nearest Sierra Leone embassy website for your country's current terms.
If you need a visa, apply 6–8 weeks before travel. Processing times are generally 5–10 working days, but mail delays happen. If you're visa-exempt, print the relevant government page and take a screenshot. Immigration officers appreciate proof you've done homework.
Common mistake: Booking your flight first, then discovering your visa will take 6 weeks. Reverse the order.
This is where timing saves money and stress. Once you've booked accommodation, work out how you're getting from Lungi to your first base.
Option A: Pre-arrange pickup through your accommodation host (like us—we handle it). Cost is transparent, driver is known to your host, and timing is locked.
Option B: Book a private car service in advance via a trusted operator. More expensive, but direct and reliable.
Option C: Ferry + taxi / minibus on arrival. Cheapest, but requires navigation, cash on arrival, and tolerance for uncertainty. This works if you're flexible and experienced with West African transport—not ideal if you're arriving tired after a long flight.
If you're moving to a second city (Bo, Kenema, Makeni) later in your trip, book that intercity transport at least a week ahead. Minibuses fill, and off-season timing can mean long waits.
Yellow fever vaccination is highly recommended and sometimes required depending on where you're coming from and where you traveled before. Check with your doctor at least 6 weeks ahead—vaccines take time to become effective, and some require multiple doses.
Travel insurance should cover medical evacuation (malaria, accidents) and trip cancellation. Sierra Leone has good hospitals in Freetown, but costs can be steep, and insurance gives peace of mind. Buy this 2–4 weeks before departure.
Not a replacement for common sense: Take malaria prophylaxis as advised by your doctor, sleep under a net, and use insect repellent. These are normal precautions in West Africa, not signs of danger.
The Sierra Leonean leone (SLL) doesn't trade easily outside the country. Don't bother exchanging before you leave home—you'll get a terrible rate. Instead, bring USD or EUR in cash (small, crisp notes), and exchange at Lungi or your first bank. ATMs work in Freetown, but expect fees and occasional outages; don't rely on them alone.
Book your mobile plan now. If you're staying more than a few days, a local SIM card from Sierratel, Africell, or Airtel is essential—far cheaper than roaming. You can buy one at the airport for a few thousand leones (~$0.50), but researching which carrier has the best coverage for your route saves frustration. Ask your accommodation host for their recommendation.
Pro tip: WhatsApp, email, and maps apps are lifelines. Confirm your phone's compatibility with local bands (3G/4G LTE) before you go.
Accommodation first locks your geography. Visa and vaccination second ensure you can legally and safely arrive. Transport third makes your movement frictionless. Currency and comms last because they're manageable on arrival—but knowing them in advance means you're not making decisions in a taxi at midnight.
Travelers who follow this sequence arrive calm. They know their first meal, their first bed, and their first move. They're not ripping through cash trying to fix logistics. They're actually on holiday.
We've been hosting visitors through Lungi for years now. The ones who come back—and write to us a year later to book again—almost always say the same thing: "I was so glad I'd sorted things out before I landed." That's not luck. That's planning.
So: accommodation, visa, transport, health, money, phone. In that order. Book your stay with us or elsewhere, but book it first. Your 2026 Sierra Leone trip will thank you.
